Aga Khan Palace Overview

Maharashtra is one of the largest and most prosperous states of India. The history of Aga Khan Palace is associated with the greatest person of India, Mahatma Gandhi.

Aga Khan Palace History

This world famous palace was built in the year 1892 AD by Sultan Mohammad Shah Aga Khan III for his rest. Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi and their secretary Mahadev Desai were imprisoned in this palace from 9 August 1942 to 6 May 1944, after the launch of the Quit India Movement organized in the year 1942.

In this palace, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai died during their imprisonment, due to which their tombs are located there. Around the 1960s, the palace was handed over to the Indian people by the Aga Khan IV to visit and honor Mahatma Gandhi, after which the palace has been controlled by the Government of India.

  2. This palace was built by the king so that people could be evacuated from the famine covered in the surrounding villages, about 1000 local laborers were used for the construction of this palace.
  3. The construction of this palace took more than 5 years, which cost about 12 lakh rupees.
  4. In this grand palace from 1942 to 1944 AD, Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai were taken prisoner by the British.
  5. This Wonderful palace, Mahadev Desai died on 15 August 1942 AD and Kasturba Gandhi on 22 February 1944 AD during his captivity, after which work was done to build his mausoleum and museum in this palace.

  9. In the year 1969 AD, this palace was lost to the local public so that it could remember Mahatma Gandhi and his supporters and in the year 1972 AD Prince Karim Aga Khan handed over this monument completely to the Gandhi Memorial Committee.
  10. Year 1974 AD Indira Gandhi, the first woman Prime Minister of India, had visited this place and she had promised to allocate about 200,000 rupees every year for its maintenance.
  11. By the 1990s, the palace had been given about 1 million rupees by the government, after which the unfair allocation of funds to the National Monument of India was banned.
  12. In the year 2003 AD, it was changed as Gandhi National Memorial by the Archaeological Survey of India, after which the memorabilia of Mahatma Gandhi and other famous leaders were kept in it.
  13. Many programs are publicly celebrated by the Gandhi Memorial Society in this palace, including Martyr's Day on 30 January, Mahashivratri (in memory of Kasturba Gandhi), Independence Day on 15 August, Republic Day on 26 January and Mahatma Gandhi on 2 October. Includes jubilee.
