Chowmahalla Palace History

The construction of this popular palace was started in the year 1750 AD by Salabat Jung which was completed between the year 1857 to 1869 by Afzal ad-Dawla and Asaf Jahan V. This palace is unique for its style and elegance. The construction of the palace, which began in the late 18th century, was built in several Architectural styles for several decades. The palace consists of two courtyards as well as a grand khilwat (court hall), fountains and gardens.

  1. The Construction work of this wonderful palace was done in the year 1750 AD by Salabat Jung, which was completed almost 1 century later between the year 1857 to the year 1869.
  2. The work of re-construction of this palace was done by Princess Eisra between the year 2005-2010 AD.
  3. This palace was one of the largest palaces in India, which occupies an area of ​​about 45 acres, but at present it is covered over an area of ​​only 12 acres.
  4. The southern courtyard is the oldest part of the palace, in which there is a group of 4 palaces, in which Afzal Mahal, Mahatab Mahal, Tehneet Mahal and Aftab Mahal are prominent. It is built in the neo-classical style.
  5. 1 Bara Imam is located in the northern courtyard of this palace, with a long corridor of rooms on the eastern side and a central fountain and pool in the center.
  6. The Heart of this palace is said to be of Khilwat Mubarak, it is held in high esteem by the people of Hyderabad, as it was the seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty.
  7. The clock above the main gate of Chowmahalla Palace is affectionately called "Khilwat Ghari". It has been running continuously for about 251 years.
  8. A rare collection of manuscripts and priceless books has been kept in the council hall located in this palace.
  9. The most beautiful structure of this palace is the Roshan Bungalow located within it, it is believed that the sixth Nizam lived here and it was he who named this building after his mother Roshan Begum. The reconstruction of this palace was also started in the year 2005, which took 5 years.
  10. The Chowmahalla Palace was presented for the Cultural Heritage Conservation Award organized by the "UNESCO Asia Pacific Merit" on 15 March 2010.
