It is a Hindu temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. All the temples of Jyotirlinga are said to be the abode of Lord Shiva. This temple is situated near Rudra Sagar Lake in Ujjain. All the temples of Jyotirlinga are considered Shivling and all Shivling are established with mantra-shakti.

Sri Mahakaleshwar Mandir History

Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple is considered to be the most revered temple among the 18 Mahashakti Peeths. It is said about the Shaktipeeths, that Shakti was born due to the fall of parts of the body of Goddess Sati with which Lord Shiva held it.

Each of the 51 Shaktipeeths has temples of Shakti and Kalabhairava. According to Shiva Purana for Jyotirlinga Temples Once there was an argument between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu for the supreme in creation, to test them Lord Shiva sent an endless pillar in the form of Jyotirlinga to the three worlds with which Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma respectively travels along the pillar to get the end of the light and finally Brahma tells a lie.

But when Vishnu accepts his defeat, Shiva appears as another pillar of light and curses Brahma that he will have no place in the ceremony, while Vishnu will be worshiped for eternity.

This is the reason why Lord Shiva's light is shown as a fiery pillar in every Jyotirlinga temple. From 1107 AD to 1728, the city of Ujjain was ruled by the Yavanas and during their reign the ancient religious traditions of the Hindus were destroyed, but the Marathas invaded the region of Malwa on 29 November 1728 and established their suzerainty. The lost religious traditions of Ujjain returned again. After this, Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple was re-constructed by General Ranoji Scindia of Maratha in 1734 AD, after this the development work of the temple continued during the Scindia dynasty.
