Abhinav Bindra was born on 28 September 1982 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand to a thriving Punjabi Sikh family. His father's name was Apjit Bindra and mother's name was Babli Bindra.

He started shooting at an early age. Determined to train with the best possible facilities, which were then not available in India, he had undergone long training in Germany.

He represented India in the Commonwealth Games in 1998. At that time, he was only 15 years of age and he was also the youngest participant in the sport competition. In 2001, Abhinav got a Bronze medal at the MUNIC World Cup and set a new junior world record 597/600. He was also given the honor of swearing athletes on behalf of 6,700 participants from 71 countries and territories. Bindra shot in Unison to set a sporting record of 1,193 points in the 10-meter air rifle doubles event with Gagan Narang winning India's inaugural gold medal at the 19th Commonwealth Games. He won a silver medal in the individual event. He became the first shooter from India to win a gold medal in the individual event at the Olympics. In 2011, the Indian Army honored Abhinav Bindra and was conferred with the rank of Lieutenant. In May 2016, the Indian Olympic Association appointed Abhinav Bindra as the Goodwill Ambassador of the Indian subcontinent for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Abhinav Bindra has also been appointed as a member of the prestigious Olympic Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Bindra is only the second Indian player after veteran badminton player Saina Nehwal to have a place in the IOC Players Commission. A film is also being produced on the life of Olympic medalist shooter Abhinav Bindra, which will feature actor Harshvardhan Kapoor, son of Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor.
