Gopal Krishna Gokhale was born on 9 May 1866 in a Chitpavan Brahmin family in Kotluk village Maharashtra of Guhagar taluk in Ratnagiri district. Their family was relatively poor. His father's name was Krishna Rao Gokhale and mother's name was Valubai Gokhale.

Gopal Krishna Gokhale died on 19 February 1915 (age 48 years) in Bombay, Bombay Presidency, British India.

Gokhale's Brahmin family was relatively poor at that time, but he did not let Gokhale's education diminish. Gokhale Ji was sent to Kolhapur's "Rajaram College", where he received his secondary level education. After receiving secondary education, Gopal Krishna Gokhale was sent to Elphinstone College, Bombay, to graduate, where he graduated in the year 1884. In the year 1886, he joined the Deccan Education Society as a professor of English at Ferguson College. Gokhale Ji married twice. Gokhale's first entry into politics was in 1888 AD at the Congress session held in Allahabad. In the year 1889, Gokhale became a member of the Indian National Congress as a disciple of the famous social reformer Mahadev Govind Ranade. He also went to England in 1896 to testify before the Welby Commission. Gopal Krishna Gokhale was one of the guides of the Indian National Movement. He has been a person of liberal ideology since the beginning. Due to which he wanted the self-government of India and the end of the empire suit. Gopal Krishna Gokhale's field of knowledge was not only limited to English and politics, but he was also a great knowledge of economics and mathematics. In year 1902, Gokhale was elected a member of the "Imperial Legislative Council". In the year 1905, in view of Gokhale's advanced liberal views, the Indian National Congress made him its president. In the year 1905, Gokhale ji established the 'Bharat Sevak Samaj' (Servants of India Society) to remove the evils of British India. Gopal Krishna Gokhale also started a famous English weekly newspaper "The Hitwad" in the year 1911 to make Indian society aware. When Mahatma Gandhi returned from Africa in the year 1915, Gokhale ji had done the work of guiding him in India, due to which Mahatma Gandhi called Gokhaleji as his mentor and guide.
