H. J. Kania has been a former judge of the Supreme Court of India. On 26 January, when independent India became a republic, Harilal Jekisundas became the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Kania country and took his oath in front of the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. His tenure ranged from 26 January 1950 to 06 November 1951.

Harilal Jekisundas Kania was born in 1890 in Surat, a middle-class family in British India (now Gujarat, India). His father's name was Jekisundas. His father was first a Sanskrit professor at Shamaldas College and then later worked as a Principal. His elder brother's name was Hiralal Jekisundas, who was a lawyer.
Harilal Jekisundas Kania died on 6 November 1951 (age 61 years) of a sudden heart attack in New Delhi, India.
Hiralal Kania became a Supreme Court Judge and later Chief Justice in 1987. Kania did her BA from Samaldas College in 1910, followed by LLB from Government Law College, Bombay in 1912 and LLM from the same institute in 1913. In 1915 he began practice as a barrister in the Bombay High Court, later marrying Kusum. Kusum was the daughter of Sir Chunnilal Mehta, who was once a member of the Executive Council of the Governor of Bombay.
Harilal Jekisundas was the executive editor of Kania India Law Reports. For some time in the year 1930, he became Executive Judge in Bombay High Court and in June 1931 he was appointed as High Judge in the same court. He held this position till 1933. Kania was named in the Birthday Honors List of the year 1943 and received the title of Sir. On 14 August 1947, the Chief Justice of the Federal Court, Sir Patrick Spenz, retired and then the post was given to Harilal Jekisundas Kania. On 26 January, when Independent India became a republic, Kania became the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the country and she read her oath in front of the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
