Leila Seth - First Lady Chief Justice (1991)

She is the first woman in India to become the Chief Justice of the High Court. She topped the London examination, and was the first Indian woman to do the feat. Leela was also a member of the Commission of Inquiry into Seth Rajan Pillai case. She remained in the Law Commission till 2000 and the credit for amending the 'Hindu Succession Act' also goes to her.

Leela Seth was born on 20 October 1930 in Lucknow (India). His father's name was Raj Bihari Seth. His father worked in the Imperial Railway service. His father died when he was eleven years old and his mother struggled financially. It was the only daughter of her parents but she also had two brothers.
Leela Seth died on 5 May 2017 (age 86) from a heart attack at her residence in Noida, India.
The name of Leela Seth is well known due to her topping the Bar Examination in London in 1958, becoming a member of the 15th Law Commission of India and a special contribution to some well-known judicial matters. He started advocacy in Kolkata, but later came to Patna and started practicing. In 1959, he enrolled in the bar and practiced in Delhi after Patna.
In 1978 she became the first woman judge of the Delhi High Court. In 1991, Himachal Pradesh was appointed the first woman Chief Justice. In 1995, he took over the responsibility of a one-member commission set up to investigate the death of Rajan Pillai in police custody. She was a member of the Law Commission of India from 1998 to 2000. Under his leadership the Hindu Succession Act was amended. Under which daughters were given equal rights in the joint family. From 1998 to 2000, she was a member of the Law Commission of India and amended the Hindu Empowerment Act under which equal rights were given to daughters in the joint family. In 2003, Leela Seth's biography "On Balance" was published by Penguin India. In 2010, Leela Seth wrote "We, the Children of India". This book explains to children the preamble of the Indian Constitution. In 2014, his book "Talking of Justice: People's Rights in Modern India" was published. In which he has worked on important issues in his long legal journey.
