Major Dhyan Chand was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad. He is known as Major Dhyan Chand. He is also called a hockey wizard, his father's name was Sameshwar Dutt Singh and his mother's name was Sharda Singh. His father was Subedar in the army. Dhyan Chand was the eldest of three brothers. He had two other brothers, whose name was Mool Singh and Roop Singh.

Major Dhyanchand died of liver cancer on 3 December 1979 (aged 74) at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

Dhyanchand Singh joined the British Indian Army on 29 August 1922. He was recruited on behalf of the Punjab Regiment in which, between 1922 and 1926, Dhyanchand played the Army Hockey Tournament and Regimental Games exclusively. After which he was selected for the Indian Army team, after which the Indian Army team went on a tour of New Zealand, in which the team won 18 matches and lost only 1 match.After this, in two-Test matches against the New Zealand team, the team won the first and lost the second. Gone Returning to India, Dhyanchand was promoted as Lance Nayak in 1927. After successfully lobbying to re-introduce field hockey at the Olympics, the newly formed Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) prepared to send its best possible team to the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. In 1925, an inter-provincial tournament was held to select team members. The inaugural teams were attended by five teams - United Provinces (UP), Punjab, Bengal, Rajputana and Central Provinces. Dhyanchand got permission from the Army to play for the United Provinces team.

At the Amsterdam Summer Olympics in 1928, the Indian team was placed in the Division A table along with Austria, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland. On 17 May, the Indian national hockey team made their Olympic debut against Austria, winning 6–0, with Dhyanchand scoring 3 goals. The next day India beat Belgium 9–0; But Dhyanchand scored only once. On 20 May, Denmark lost to India 5–0, with Dhyanchand netting 3. Two days later, he scored 4 goals when India beat Switzerland 6–0. The final match took place on 26 May, in which India faced the Netherlands home team and then India succeeded in defeating the host team 3–0 (with Singh score 2), and the Indian team won their country. Won first Olympic gold medal. The Indian team left for San Francisco on 30 May and arrived on 6 July. He arrived in Los Angeles three weeks before the opening ceremony of the Olympics on July 30. On 4 August 1932, India played their first match against Japan and won 11–1. Dhyanchand, Roop Singh, Gurmeet Singh scored three times each, and Dickie Carr scored once. In the final on 11 August, India played against the host USA. India won 24–1, a world record at the time (was broken in 2003), and won the gold medal once again.

Dhyanchand scored 8 times, Roop Singh scored 10, Gurmeet Singh 5 and Painegar scored once. In fact, Chand, along with his brother Roop, scored 25 of the 35 goals scored by India. This led to them being dubbed "" hockey twins "". In December 1934 Dhyanchand got his first captaincy, this match was against him, in which he played a total of 48 games under his captaincy, winning 40 matches of India, Dhyanchand scored 201 goals in 23 matches. Chand continued his number in the post-independence Emergency of the Indian Army, which had IEC 3526, but apparently was not given a regular commission. In 1951, he was awarded the inaugural Dhyanchand tournament at the National Stadium in India, in which he praised the audience.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the prestigious civilian honor of India in 1956. Dhyan Chand was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956 in the field of sports. He was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad, United Provinces, British India. His birthday has been declared as National Sports Day of India. On this day, the National Awards for outstanding performance in sports are given to Arjuna and Dronacharya Awards. Dhyanchand was declared the player of the century by the Indian Olympic Association.
