Neil Armstrong - First person to land on the moon (1969)
Neil Armstrong was an American astronomer and the first to step on the moon. American astronaut Neil Armstrong, who first stepped to the moon, had aroused interest in air travel since childhood when his father took him to see air flights.
Armstrong's call-up from the Navy came on January 26, 1949, requiring him to report for flight training with Class 5-49 at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida. After passing the medical examination, he became a midshipman on February 24, 1949. Flight training was conducted at the North American SNJ Trainer, on 2 March 1950, he made his first carrier carrier landing. On the USS Cabot, a feat he considered comparable to his first solo flight. Gruesman was then sent to the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas for training on the F8F Bearcut, which culminated in a carrier landing on the USS Wright. On 16 August 1950, Armstrong was informed by letter that he was a fully qualified naval aviator.
Armstrong was assigned to Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron 7 (FASRON 7) at NAS San Diego (now known as NAS North Island). On November 27, 1950, he was assigned to the VF-51, an all-jet squadron that became its youngest officer, and on January 5, 1951, a Grumman F9F Panther made its first flight in the jet. On 5 June 1951, and two days later made its first jet carrier landing on the USS Essex. On June 28, 1951, Essex scheduled sailing for Korea, carrying VF-51s, which served as ground-attack aircraft. The VF-51 flew past Naval Air Station Barbers Point in Hawaii, where it underwent fighter-bomber training before re-steering the ship in late July.
