Pranab Mukherjee was an Indian politician who served as the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017. In five decades of political life, Mukherjee was a senior leader in the Indian National Congress and served on several ministerial portfolios in the Indian government. Mukherjee was the Union Finance Minister from 2009 to 2012, before his election as President. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, the highest civilian honor of India in 2019.
Pranab Mukherjee started his political career as a founding member of the Bangla Congress. He became a member of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of the Indian Parliament) in July 1969 on a Bungalow Congress ticket. Whose Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi recognized the talent of Pranab Mukherjee and recruited him in his party Indian National Congress. Pranab Mukherjee was re-elected to the House in 1975, 1981, 1993 and 1999. In 1973 Indira Gandhi's cabinet was appointed Union Deputy Minister of Industrial Development. As Finance Minister, Mukherjee had signed the letter appointing Manmohan Singh as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He also has the distinction of being the minister of various important ministries, including Ministry of Defense, Finance, Foreign Affairs, Revenue, Shipping, Transport, Communication, Economic Affairs, Commerce and Industry.
He was a leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party and the Congress Legislature Party, which includes all the Congress MPs and MLAs of the country. Apart from this, he was also the Union Finance Minister in the Council of Ministers of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of the Congress-led government, leader of the House in the Lok Sabha, President of the Bengal Pradesh Congress Party. On October 10, 2008, Mukherjee and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signed the Section 123 agreement. He was also a member of the Board of Administrators of the World Bank of the International Monetary Fund, the Asian Development Bank and the African Development Bank.
In 1984, he chaired the Group-24 meeting of the IMF and the World Bank. Between May and November 1995, he chaired the SAARC Council of Ministers Conference. From 1991 to 1996, he held the post of Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. In 004, he served as the defense minister of the Congress in power on 24 October 2006 when he was appointed as the foreign minister of India, replacing A.K. in the Ministry of Defense.
