Sukumar Sen - First Chief Election Commissioner of India (1950)
Sukumar Sen was an Indian civil servant. Sukumar Sen was the first Chief Election Commissioner or Chief Election Commissioner of India. Sukumar Sen served in this post from 21 March 1950 to 19 December 1958.
Sukumar Sen was born on 02 January 1898 in Bengal, British India. His father's name was Akshay Kumar, who worked in a civil service. His parents had three sons, of which Sukumar was the youngest. His elder brother's name was Ashok Kumar Sen and one brother Amiya Kumar Sen.
Sukumar Sen died on 13 May 1963 (aged 65).Sukumar Sen studied at Presidency College, Calcutta (now Kolkata) before going on to study at London University. At the age of just 22, he got posted in the Civil Services Service.
In the year 1921, Sen joined the Indian Civil Service and served in various districts as an ICS officer and as a judge. In the year 1947, he was appointed as the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, which at that time was the most senior rank an ICS officer could obtain in any state of British India. He also served as Sudan's first Chief Election Commissioner. Historian Ramachandra Guha wrote an article about Sukumar Sen in the English newspaper 'The Hindu' in the year 2002 on the 50th anniversary of the first general election of independent India. Sukumar Sen was the first Vice Chancellor of Burdwan University, which started on 15 June 1960 .
Sukumar Sen was awarded the 'Padma Bhushan' in the administrative service sector in the year 1954. He was one of the first recipients of Padma Bhushan's civilian honor.
