Dr. Zakir Hussain was the third President of India, whose term was from 13 May 1967 to 03 May 1968. He was born on February 8, 1897 in a wealthy Pathan family of Hyderabad, Telangana. His father's name was Fida Hussain Khan. Dr. Zakir Hussain had his initial education at Islamia High School, Etawah, after which he went to Aligarh Muslim University for further studies. He also received a PhD in Economics from the University of Germany. He was a practical and optimistic person.
He laid the foundation of Jamia Millia Islamia University in Aligarh in 1920, which later shifted to Delhi. The university reached the verge of closure in the year 1927, but due to the efforts of Dr. Zakir Hussain, this educational institution managed to retain its popularity. He continued to offer his support, thus providing his academic and managerial leadership to the institution for twenty-one years. In the year 1948 Zakir Hussain became the Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University and after 4 years he entered the Rajya Sabha. In the year 1957, Dr. Zakir Hussain was appointed as the Governor of the state of Bihar. Dr. Zakir Hussain has also been the Vice President of India from the years 1962 to 1967.

Dr. Zakir Hussain was elected as the third President of the country on 13 May 1967. He was the first Muslim President of India. Hussein complied with Gandhi's appeal to boycott government institutions in the country. He helped in the establishment of the Muslim National University in Aligarh (later moved to Delhi) and was its vice-chancellor from 1926 to 1948. On the invitation of Mahatma Gandhi, he also became the chairman of the National Commission for Primary Education, which was established in 1937 to make Gandhian curriculum for schools. Hussain became the Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University in 1948 and after four years he entered the Rajya Sabha. In 1956–58, he served on the Executive Committee of the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO). In 1957 he was appointed as the Governor of Bihar and in 1962 he was elected Vice-President of India.
