Andorra claims that it is the last independent survivor of Marca Hispanica, the buffer states created by Charlemagne to keep the Islamic Moors from advancing into Islamic France. In 1933, France annexed Andorra as a result of social unrest before the election. On July 12, 1934, an adventurer named Boris Skosref issued a proclamation in Urgel, declaring himself Boris I, Prince of Andorra, simultaneously declaring war on the Bishop of Urgel. He was arrested by the Spanish authorities on 20 July and eventually expelled from Spain. Andorra formally became a parliamentary democracy in May 1993, following the approval of a new constitution by a popular referendum in May 1993. And a new constitution retained the French and Spanish co-princes, although with fewer and narrowly defined powers.
Andorra is a small, landlocked country in southwestern Europe, located in the eastern Pyrenees mountain range and bordered by Spain and France. At an area of 468 sq km, it is the sixth smallest country in Europe and also the largest part of the European microstate. Andorra mainly consists of rugged mountains, Coma Pedrosa at 2,942 meters, and Andorra has an average elevation of 1,996 meters. These are dissected into a Y shape by three narrow valleys that join one as the main stream, the Gran Valira River, leaving the country for Spain.
