It first appeared on a Spanish map in 1511. The Portuguese Empire claimed the island between 1532 and 1536, but later abandoned it in 1620. On 30 November 1966, Barbados became an independent state and commonwealth with Elizabeth II as its queen.
Situated on the Caribbean island in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, the country was populated by the British with the help of slaves brought from Africa and India for sugarcane production. Spread over just 430 sq km, the country around the island consists of St. Vincent and the Grenaginas and St. Lucia in the west and Trinidad and Tobago in the south. According to the World Bank, Barbados is classified among the 66 top high-income economies in the world. Despite this, a 2012 self-study in association with the Caribbean Development Bank showed that 20% of Barbadians live in poverty, and about 10% are unable to meet their basic daily food needs.
English is the official language of Barbados, and is used for communication, administration, and public services throughout the island. As the official language of the country, the standard of English conforms to the vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling and traditions, but is not the same as British English.
