Archaeological research has shown that the earliest known settlements in the region of present-day Kosovo were linked to the Neolithic Starčevo culture and material culture groups that succeeded it. The Byzantine administration was wiped out by Slavic invasions beginning in the 6th – 7th centuries AD. In the centuries that followed, the region was controlled by alternating between the Byzantines and the first Bulgarian Empire. The Battle of Kosovo of 1389 is considered one of the defining moments of Serbian medieval history. The region was the origin of the Serbian medieval state, which has also been the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church since the 14th century, when its status was upgraded to patriarchy.
The collapse of the Serbian Empire at the end of the 14th century saw a quick succession of regional rulers until the 15th century, when it had become part of the Ottoman Empire by the early 20th century.
