Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir was the title given to the head of government of Jammu and Kashmir. According to the Constitution of India, the Lieutenant Governor is the legal head of the state, but actual executive authority rests with the Chief Minister. After elections to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, the Lieutenant Governor usually invites the party with a majority to form the government. The Lieutenant Governor appoints the Chief Minister, whose Council of Ministers is collectively responsible to the Legislative Assembly.

BJP, which is part of the government in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, announced to break the alliance with PDP on June 19. There was a conflict going on between both the parties for a long time on many issues including ceasefire. After withdrawal of support by BJP, Mehbooba Mufti has submitted her resignation to Governor NN Vohra, with which President's rule has been imposed in the state. Mehbooba Mufti is the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. She took oath as Chief Minister on 04 April 2016 and remained on this post till 19 June 2018. Currently, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir serves as the head of the government of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir until a new Chief Minister is appointed after the next Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election.
History of Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, in August 2019. Jammu and Kashmir became an integral part of India on October 26, 1947. Since March 1965, 9 persons have been elected as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Mehbooba Mufti was the first and last woman Chief Minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Ghulam Mohammad Sadiq was the first Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
