Who is the Home Minister?
The head of the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of India is called the Home Minister. One of the senior most posts in the Union Cabinet, the main responsibility of the Home Minister is to look after matters related to India's internal security.
Current Home Minister of India 2024:
The current Home Minister of India is Amit Shah. He has assumed office as Home Minister on 30 May 2019, before that Rajnath Singh was working in this post from 26 May 2014 to 30 May 2019. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the first Home Minister of India. He served in this post from 02 September 1946 to 15 December 1950.

Ministry of Home Affairs (India):
The Ministry of Home Affairs is one of the important ministries of the Government of India. The Ministry of Home Affairs provides manpower and financial assistance, guidance and expertise to the State Governments for maintaining security, peace and harmony without interfering with the constitutional rights of the States.
Departments of the Ministry of Home Affairs:
The following are the constituent departments of the Ministry of Home Affairs under the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961:
- Internal Security Department: Oversees police, law and order and rehabilitation related work.
- State Department: The Center deals with the matters relating to State Relations, Inter-State Relations, Union Territories and Freedom Fighters Pension.
- Home Department: Deals with the functions of the President and the Vice-President, notification regarding the appointment of the Prime Minister and other ministers, etc.
- Jammu and Kashmir Affairs Department: deals with all constitutional provisions relating to the State of Jammu and Kashmir and all other matters relating to the State, except those relating to the Ministry of External Affairs.
- Border Management Department: deals with border management including coastal borders.
- Department of Official Language: deals with the implementation of the provisions of the Constitution relating to the Official Language and the provisions of the Official Languages Act, 1963.
