Every year on 21 November, 25 November is celebrated as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in different countries of the world.

International Womens Violence Eradication Day History

On November 25, 1960, three sisters Patria Mercedes Mirabell, María Argentina Minerva Mirabell and Antonia María Teresa Mirabell were assassinated on the orders of the Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo. These three sisters strongly opposed Trujillo's dictatorship.

Supporters and activists of women's rights celebrate this day since 1981 as the anniversary of the death of these three sisters. On 17 December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously decided that 25 November would be observed as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

International Womens Violence Eradication Day Objective

This day is an opportunity for NGOs, international organizations and governments to spread public awareness of violence against women. Many programs are organized on this day highlighting the need to do more to stop violence against women.

Women's groups and organizations organize rallies, seminars, poster competitions, essay competitions, mass banquets, etc. to bring to the fore the worrisome condition of women in society and the consequent ill effects on the physical, mental and psychological health of women.

Around 35% of women worldwide have faced physical or sexual violence at some point in their lifetime.
