On 22 December 1992, the United Nations declared 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty every year. On this day, efforts for poverty alleviation, development and various works and schemes are issued by different nations. This day was First celebrated in 1987 in France in which about one lakh people demonstrated for human rights. This movement was started by Joseph Wrenski, the founder of ATD Fourth World. In addition, the fight against poverty lies at the core of the development of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the new Sustainable Development Goals.
