International Museum Council:
The International Council of Museums or International Council of Museums (ICOM) is a global sector of museums and museum professionals, committed to the promotion and protection of natural and cultural heritage, present and future, tangible and intangible.
ICOM's commitment to the promotion of culture and knowledge is supported by its 31 international committees, which conduct advanced research in their respective fields for the benefit of the museum community. The organization is involved in fighting illegal trafficking, assisting museums in emergency situations, and other activities. ICOM created International Museum Day in 1977. The organization chooses this theme every year and coordinates the programme.
Archaeological Survey of India Department:
In India also various programs are organized on 'International Museum Day'. The main objective of these programs is to make the general public, students and research scholars aware of the rich cultural heritage available in various museums.
On this day, admission to all the museums of the Government of India is made free. The Archaeological Survey of India has set the theme of 'International Museum Day' for the year 2011 as "Museum and Memory". There are more than 40 museums in the country under the 'Archaeological Survey of India Department'.
