National Bird Day is celebrated every year on 12 November across the country. National Bird Day was declared by the Government of India on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Dr. Salim Ali, India's famous Ornithologist, and Naturalist.

Biography of Dr. Salim Ali:
Dr. Salim Ali was born on 12 November 1896 in a Sulaimani Bohra Muslim family of Bombay. Dr. Salim Ali was a world-renowned Indian ornithologist and naturalist. The full name of Dr. Salim Ali is Dr. Salim Moizuddin Abdul Ali.
Salim Ali's early education took place at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. Under the supervision of WS Millard, secretary of the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Salim began serious studies on the birds, who had identified the unusually colored sparrow.
Dr. Salim Ali died on 27 June 1987 at the age of 91. Salim Ali Ornithology and Natural History Center was established in his name by 'Bombay Natural History Society' and 'Ministry of Environment and Forests' at a place called 'Anaikatty' near Coimbatore.
