What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a chronic disease of the brain, characterized by frequent seizures or seizures. A person has a stroke due to sudden, abnormal and excessive electrical transmission in the neurons (brain cells) and as a result the person becomes unconscious. This disease can affect a person of any age and the problems of every age person suffering from this disease can be different.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 5 million people worldwide suffer from epilepsy, of which eighty percent live in developing countries. Epilepsy is treatable, yet three-quarters of those affected in developing countries do not receive the necessary treatment. About one million people in India suffer from epileptic seizures.
Symptoms of Epilepsy
- Sudden twitching/twitching (uncontrolled tremors in the extremities).
- Fainting.
- Sensation (feeling of a pin or needle prick) in the arm or leg.
- Tightness in the muscles of the arms and legs or face.
Causes of Epilepsy:
- Brain damage such as prenatal and perinatal injuries.
- Congenital abnormality.
- Brain infection.
- Stroke and brain tumours.
- Head injury/accident.
- Suffering from high fever for a long time during childhood.
Tips for patients suffering from epilepsy:
- Patients suffering from epilepsy should take medicines regularly as per the advice of the doctor. Even if they do not have seizures, they should take medicines as per the doctor's advice.
- Patients should not stop taking the drugs without the advice of their doctor.
- Epilepsy patients should consult their doctor while taking any other kind of medicines to avoid possible side effects of those medicines or any other complications.
- Don't drink alcohol. Consumption of alcohol develops the chances of having an attack.
Treatment of Epilepsy:
Epilepsy can be treated with drugs and surgery, but this disease requires continuous treatment. Sometimes the treatment of this disease lasts for three to five years. Generally, a patient of epilepsy recovers after taking the drug for 3-5 years, but this is possible only in 70 percent of the patients.
An operation is necessary for another 30 percent of patients. In epileptic patients, there is a problem of change in voice, dizziness, tongue twitching. Such patients can be cured only by operation.
