National Milk Day is celebrated across the country on 26 November every year. It is noteworthy that 'National Milk Day' is celebrated on the birthday of Dr. Verghese Kurien, the father of the white revolution in India.

National Milk Day History

In the year 2014, the Indian Dairy Association (IDA) took the initiative to celebrate this day for the First time. The First National Milk Day was celebrated on 26 November 2014, in which various milk producers from 22 states participated. World Milk Day is celebrated by the United Nations on 1 June every year.

India has Achieved a growth rate of 6.28 percent in milk production in the last two years 2014-15 and 2015-16. Due to this the per capita availability of milk has increased from 307 grams per day in the year 2013-14 to 340 grams per day in the year 2015-16. In 1998, India became the largest milk producer in the world, overtaking the United States.

Biography of Dr. Verghese Kurien:

Kurien was born on November 26, 1921 in Kozhikode, Kerala. Dr. Verghese Kurien was a renowned Indian social entrepreneur and is still known as the 'Father of the White Revolution' for his 'Billion Liter Idea' (Operation Flood) - the world's largest agricultural development program - today.

Dr. Verghese Kurien is known as the 'Father of White Revolution' in India. This operation gave India more progress than America in 1998 and made it the largest producer of milk from a milk-deficient country.

Important facts about Dr. Verghese Kurien:

Dr. Verghese Kurien, also known as Milkman of India, made the country the world's largest producer of milk by removing the shortage of milk.
He established 30 institutions, which are run by various farmers and activists.
Kurien was instrumental in the establishment and success of the Amul brand.
He was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership in 1963 and the "World Food Prize" in 1989.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in the year 1965, the Padma Bhushan in the year 1966 and the Padma Vibhushan in the year 1999 by the Government of India.
Dr. Verghese Kurien was awarded the "Carnegie Watler World Peace Prize".
Dr. Verghese Kurien was also awarded the "International Person of the Year Award" of America.
Dr. Verghese Kurien was also awarded "Krishi Ratna Samman".
Dr. Verghese Kurien died on 09 September 2012 at the age of 90.
