The concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada's International Center for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit - United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was. "World Oceans Day" was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008. The International Day supports the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) worldwide and promotes the public interest in the conservation of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources.

It was Announced to celebrate this day at the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in the year 1992. In December 2008, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared June 8 as World Oceans Day. The first 'World Ocean Day' was observed on June 08, 2009.

What is the ocean called?

The ocean is not only a symbol of life on our earth, but also plays a major role in environmental balance. The origin of life on Earth is believed to be from the oceans. For the first time, the sprout of life had sprouted in the ocean water itself. Today the ocean is a storehouse of immense biodiversity.

Oceans cover about 71 percent of the Earth's surface. The world's oceans and seas have an area of 367 million square kilometers, which is twice the area of Mars and nine times the area of the Moon. 4. Antarctic Ocean or Southern Ocean: The Antarctic Ocean or the South Polar Ocean is surrounded on all sides by the continent of Antarctica. Its area is 1,40,00,000 square kilometers.

5. Arctic Ocean: This ocean located in the northern hemisphere of the Earth is known as the Arctic Ocean or the Northpolar Ocean. It is the smallest and shallowest of the world's five major oceans. Its area is 1,40,00,000 sq. km.
