India's First Hydrogen Train
After the Finance Minister presented a clear budget, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that India's hydrogen train will come for the first time by December. The Union Budget 2023-24 announced a major reform of Rs 2.41 lakh crore for the Indian Railways, the highest ever for the Railways, it will be interested in meeting the aspirations of passengers.
- The new train will run on Kalka-Shimla Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Darjeeling Hills, Kangra Railway, Bilimora Waghai, Mhow-Patalpani, Marwar-Devgarh-Madaria and Manran Hill Railway routes in Maharashtra.
- Hydrogen engines have been developed by some countries like Germany, France and China and now India will also be a part of it.
- As a pilot project, the Railways is preparing a prototype of a hydrogen fuel based train at the Northern Railway Workshop. It will be tested on the Sonipat-Jind section of Haryana.
- Hydrogen trains will replace the trains of the 1950-60s.
- Hydrogen train will be run by Indian Railways to promote tourism.
- The newly-built hydrogen-powered trains will be called Vande Metro.
