Ghol fish was declared the state fish of Gujarat by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel during the two-day Global Fisheries Summit India 2023 in Ahmedabad. Many dignitaries were present in this program. Ghol fish is one of the largest fish found in India. This fish is found in golden-brown color in the marine areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
What is fish special?
This marine fish is one of the most expensive fish in the country and is known as "Gold Fish" due to its price and demand. Scientifically it is identified as 'Protonibia diacanthus'. Apart from the coasts of Gujarat, this fish is also found in Maharashtra. This is the largest fish found in India. Gujarat's maritime border is quite long. Marine fish production has increased in the state. At present the state exports more than five thousand crores, which is 17 percent of the total exports.
The fish is valuable and sought after for its meat and air bladder. The smelt fish is used to make beer and wine and its air bladder is used in pharmaceuticals. Due to so many uses of Ghol fish, its meat and air bladder are sold separately. Especially its air bladder is exported from Mumbai.
What is its price?
The length of Ghol fish is about one and a half meter. The longer the Ghol fish, the higher its price. The price of ghol fish per unit length can be up to Rs 5 lakh. Fishermen who are capable of catching ghol fish can earn millions annually.
