Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Ajay Bhatnagar has been appointed as Special Director in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Bhatnagar, a 1989 batch IPS officer of Jharkhand cadre, is currently serving as Additional Director in CBI. He will remain in this post till 20 November 2024.

Senior IPS officer Ajay Bhatnagar has played an important role in Jharkhand Police. He has served as ADG (HQ), ADG of CID in Jharkhand and DIG of Special Branch at Police Headquarters. In addition, he was also the SP of Hazaribagh. Ajay Bhatnagar has worked for CRPF, NPA and CISF. He was appointed as the Joint Director of CBI on 24 January 2018. In January 2020, Ajay Bhatnagar was promoted to the post of additional director of the agency.

The Indian Police Service (IPS) is a civil service within the All India Services constituted under Article 312 of the Constitution of India. IPS officers provide senior level leadership to police forces both in the states and at the Centre. The service is organized into 25 state cadres, which are reviewed after every 5 years.

Current Roles and Functions of Indian Police Service Officer:
- Duties based on border responsibilities in the areas of maintenance of public peace and order, crime prevention, investigation and detection, intelligence collection, VIP security, anti-terrorist, border policing, railway policing, combating smuggling, drug trafficking completion etc.
- Leading and commanding Indian intelligence agencies such as the Indian federal law enforcement agencies, civilian and armed police forces.
- To lead and command various Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).
- To lead and command the force with courage, integrity, dedication and a strong sense of service to the people.
- Try to inculcate such values and norms in the police forces under you which will help them to serve the people better.
- Develop integrity of the highest order, sensitivity to the aspirations of the people in a rapidly changing social and economic environment, respect for human rights, a broad liberal view of law and justice, and a high standard of professionalism.
How is the CBI director appointed?
The Director of CBI is appointed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by the Prime Minister of India. The ACC consists of the Prime Minister, the Minister of Home Affairs and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha or the largest opposition party.
