Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the new Parliament House on May 28, 2023. Dressed in traditional attire, he reached there and was received by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Accompanied by priests from Karnataka's Sringeri Math, the Prime Minister participated in a ceremonial "Ganapati Homam" to seek divine blessings for the inauguration of the new Parliament building. On this occasion, the Prime Minister said that this building will become a means of realizing the dreams of our freedom fighters. This building will see the dreams of a developed India becoming a reality.
Construction work of Parliament House: -
The construction area of the new Parliament House is 64,500 square metres. 60 thousand laborers have got direct employment in making it. Employment of more than 23 lakh man-days was created by managing the laborers associated with the project. Its construction work, which started in December 2020, has been completed in about two and a half years.
New Parliament Building 2023
The Old Parliament House in New Delhi was the seat of the Parliament of India between 26 January 1950 and 27 May 2023. It now includes the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, which represent the lower and upper houses, respectively, of the bicameral houses of India. From 2020 to 2023, the new Parliament House built near this building on a triangular plot was inaugurated on 28 May 2023. It was built as part of the Central Vista redevelopment project of the Government of India.
The specialty of the new Parliament House: -
- The Lok Sabha building in Parliament has been designed on the theme of the national bird peacock and the Rajya Sabha has been designed on the theme of the national flower lotus.
- According to officials, all MPs will be given separate offices in the new building, which will have modern digital facilities to move towards the goal of 'paperless office'.
- The new building will have a grand Constitution Hall or Samvidhan Hall which will reflect India's democratic heritage. The original copy of the Constitution of India will also be kept there.
- A grand Constitution Hall has been built in the new Parliament House, in which India's ancient culture, democratic traditions have been displayed. Along with this, lounge for MPs, rooms for various committees, dining area and adequate parking have been arranged in the new Parliament House.
- In the music gallery Swami Haridas, images and instruments of Tyagaraja, manifestation of Navaras, classical dance; At the same time, a glimpse of Brihadeeswarar Temple-Tanjore to Auroville-Puducherry has been shown in the Vastu gallery.
- At present the number of Lok Sabha seats is 545. There has been no change in the number of these seats on the basis of delimitation done on the basis of 1971 census.
- This stability regarding the number of seats will remain till the year 2026, but after that there is a possibility of increase in seats. In such a situation, there will not be enough space for the newly elected MPs.
- Cameras with thermal imaging system and face recognition system have been installed in the new Parliament House. These help in preventing suspicious activities. Update CCTV system, works on 360 degree. The new Parliament House has been equipped with a foolproof cyber system. The experts who designed this system have termed it as 'state-of-the-art' cyber security.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi felicitated the workers who helped in the construction and development of the new Parliament House.
What is Sangol?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi installed the golden scepter named Sangol at a prominent place in the new Parliament building. This scepter holds historical significance as it was originally presented to Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, symbolizing the transfer of power from the British to the Indian people. The scepter, known as "sangol", is derived from the Tamil word "semmai", meaning "righteousness".
