Three important bills for Jammu and Kashmir passed in Rajya Sabha
Rajya Sabha passed three bills related to Jammu and Kashmir, which provide for reservation for Other Backward Classes in local bodies and to modify the list of Scheduled Castes and Tribes at the Centre.
All three amendments passed :-
- Jammu and Kashmir Local Bodies Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024
- The Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Castes Order (Amendment) Bill, 2024
- The Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Tribes Order (Amendment) Bill, 2024
Jammu and Kashmir Local Bodies Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024
'Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai introduced the Jammu and Kashmir Local Bodies Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The Bill amends the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989 (IX of 1989), the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Act, 2000 and the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Corporation Act, 2000. The purpose of this law is to provide reservation to Other Backward Classes in Panchayats and Municipalities in Jammu and Kashmir and to bring consistency in the local body laws of the Union Territory with the provisions of the Constitution.
Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Castes Order (Amendment)
The Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Castes Order (Amendment) Bill was introduced in the House by Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar. Which adds Valmiki community to the list of Scheduled Castes. The Bill amends the Scheduled Castes Order of the Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) 1956, which lists the castes considered to be Scheduled Castes in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Tribes Order (Amendment) Bill
Union Minister of Tribal Affairs and Agriculture and Farmers Welfare introduced the Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Tribes Order (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which seeks to amend the Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Tribes Order 1989 to create a separate list for Scheduled Tribes.
