Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath declared the Ganga dolphin as the state aquatic animal. Dolphin based ecotourism program started at various sites along the banks of river Ganga. It was launched at six locations in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. Meri Ganga Meri Dolphin 2023 Campaign:
The “Meri Ganga Meri Dolphin 2023” campaign is a comprehensive initiative that aims to protect the Ganga dolphin. This census extends from Muzaffarpur Barrage to Narora Barrage along the banks of river Ganga. The campaign was launched through a collaboration between the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-India in 2012 on the occasion of the third anniversary of the state's decision.
The expedition uses a unique method to count dolphins. It involves two teams, each team traveling at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour, with an interval of 10 minutes between them. This approach allows for more accurate data collection and identification of individual dolphins.
Number of Dolphins
Based on historical data, the Ganges dolphin population has shown both growth and fluctuations. For example, in 2015, there were 22 dolphins, while in 2020, the count increased to 41 dolphins. These numbers demonstrate the importance of continued monitoring and conservation efforts. The estimated population of Ganga dolphin in Uttar Pradesh is currently around 2000.
