National Mission for Clean Ganga
The 48th meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) was held on 18 April under the Director General of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) G. Ashok Kumar presided. Eight projects worth about Rs 638 crore were approved in the meeting.
In an effort to clean the Hindon River, a tributary of the Yamuna River, four projects worth Rs 407.39 crore have been sanctioned to reduce pollution in Shamli district. These projects are part of the comprehensive Hindon Rejuvenation Plan. Hindon river has been identified as the first priority in the polluted rivers segment.
Krishna river
Krishna River is one of the major tributaries of Hindon which discharges the polluted water of Shamli district into Hindon River. The projects that were approved are to arrest the flow of polluted water into the Krishna river.
Main Point:
- Two more sewerage management projects were approved in the meeting, one each in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. In Bihar, a project for construction of 3 STPs (7 MLD, 3.5 MLD and 6 MLD in Zone 1 and 2 respectively) along with other works was taken up for works worth Rs 77.39 crore.
- This campaign will stop the flow of absorbent water in Kiul river, a tributary of Ganga. As part of the preparations for the Mahakumbh to be held in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh in 2025, a project for the development of 7 ghats in Prayagraj was also approved in the meeting of the Election Commission.
- These ghats include Dashashmedh Ghat, Kila Ghat, Nao Ghat, Gyan Ganga Ghat Ghat, Saraswati Ghat, Mahewa Ghat and Rasulabad Ghat.
- These Ghats have facilities like bathing place, changing room, work for all, drinking water place, flood light for night, kiosk, flashing etc.
In Bihar, a project for construction of 3 STPPs (7 MLD, 3.5 MLD and 6 MLD in Zone 1 and 2 respectively) was approved at a work cost of Rs 77.39 crore, along with other works. This group will stop the flow of Jeev Jal in Kiul river, a tributary of Ganga. - In Madhya Pradesh, a project for construction of 22 MLD STP, 2.38 MLD Common Effluent Planning Plant (CTPP) and other works was approved with a cost of Rs 92.78 crore. The project will arrest the flow of exploited water into Kshipra river, which is a tributary of Yama.
- Another Ghat development project was approved for Haridwar, Uttarakhand where Akhand Param Dham Ghat will be constructed at a total cost of 2.12 Crore Crore. The project includes construction of shops/kiosks (for Ghat Pe Haat activities), yoga/meditation lawns, meditation days, platforms for cultural and religious activities, etc.
National Mission for Clean Ganga
National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) was registered as a Society on August 12, 2011 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. It is the National Ganga River Rights Authority (NGRBA) constituted under the Environment (Protection) Act (EPA), 1986.
Namami Gange Program
The Namami Gange Program is an Integrated Conservation Mission, approved as a flagship program by the Government of India in June 2014 with a budget outlay of Rs 22,500 crore from 2023-26. So as to fulfill the twin objectives of effective abatement of pollution, conservation and rejuvenation.
It Objective to be a community engagement that will connect various interest groups including scientists, technology companies, investors and community members.
NMCG (National Mission for Clean Ganga) has decided to declare Chacha Chowdhary, a popular comic book character, as the mascot of the Namami Gange programme. Under the Namami Gange programme, all drains falling into the Saryu river in the religious and historical city of Ayodhya are being tapped and the contaminated water is being transported to the sewerage treatment plant. The research division of Namami Gange is headed by CG Ganga, which has been set up under the aegis of IIT Kanpur.
