Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has described the metro as a matter of pride for her country. The driver of the first train was a female driver, Mariam Afiza. Dhaka's first metro line, the line, took about six years to build. The project was largely funded by Japan, a major development partner of Bangladesh.
The first phase of the metro is about 12 km from Uttara to Agargaon. The new metro line is expected to provide relief to around 60,000 people in an hour. The metro rail is part of the Bangladesh project of mass rapid transit to be completed by 2030.
