What is Green Steel?
The Green Steel Passport is steel construction without the use of fuel. This new phenomenon is about producing steel using low-carbon energy linkages such as coal gasification, or electricity, rather than the traditional carbon-intensive manufacturing route of plant-fired plants.
Importance of Green Steel:
- Such initiatives are being seen as a positive change in the steel production field. This is a good attempt to change the concept of 'hard to abate sector' carbon emitting in the steel sector for a long time.
- By promoting green steel, carbon emissions from the steel industry in the country can be reduced.
- At the international level, steel industry accounts for 7 percent of carbon emissions, of which 12 percent comes from India's steel industry.
- Such eco-friendly efforts in India will help in achieving India's net zero-carbon goal and will also be beneficial for our environment.
National Steel Policy:
The National Steel Policy was released in the year 2017, which aims to achieve a steel production capacity of 300 metric tonnes by 2030. This policy includes increasing domestic consumption, production of high quality steel, and manufacturing of world class steel in India. The manufacturing of green steel is also being promoted under the National Steel Policy. So that the carbon footprint in the country can be reduced.
